It’s Friday and you've worked hard this week so, how about something easy? It’s the Fast Friday 5 – a quick five things you need to know, served up nice and simple.
Chickpeas, lemon, garlic, tahini and olive oil all blended together - that's the classic hummus recipe.
Don't get us wrong, we love it traditional, but if you're like us and the hot weather has you hankering for hummus almost daily, it might be time to change it up a bit with some spectacular and delicious variations.
Here are our (current) 5 favourite creative hummus recipes.
1. Borschty. We can't help but picture two people bumping into each other on the Caspian coast, 'hey, you got your borscht in my hummus.' 'You got you hummus in my borscht.' Presto, snack made in heaven (everything is pink in heaven, right?) Make this hummus by blending a can of kidney beans (white or red) for a more traditional borschty feel, then add one big red beet (peeled and boiled or roasted), a clove of garlic, juice of half a lemon, tbsp of olive oil, a pinch of paprika and salt and pepper to taste.
2. Kooky Cookie. Got a sweet tooth and a hummus craving. No problem - this hummus recipe is for dessert. Simply swap the tahini for peanut butter, skip the lemon, add a dash of vanilla extract and 1/2 cup of organic, fair trade chocolate chips. Not sweet enough? Sweeten to taste with maple syrup.
3. Guacahummus. Double dipping your hummus into the guacamole is delicious but frowned on at parties. Show them what they've been missing by putting these two party favourites together in the blender. Make traditional hummus but skip the tahini, swap your lemon juice for lime juice, add a tsp of cumin, a handful of cilantro and, of course, one whole ripe avocado. Salt and pepper to taste and garnish with finely diced tomatoes. Then, skip the party and keep this creamy green dip all for yourself.
4. Some Like it Hot. Keep the water handy for this one. Take traditional hummus and blend in one each of roasted jalepeno and cayenne peppers, fresh cilantro and chopped green onion. Slowly add cracked black pepper until you've reached the five-alarm stage. If you over do it, blend in some plain organic yogurt to take it down a notch.
5. Super Sexy. This one looks and tastes a lot like a classic hummus but it's hiding some libido boosting ingredients. Change out the tahini for walnut butter (or finely ground walnuts) and then to your traditional recipe add a tbsp of maca powder and a dash of ginger. Garnish with raw pumpkin seeds and serve with celery sticks. The real trick here is that this variation comes with a rule - someone else has to feed it to you.
Besides being the perfect food for hot days and potluck picnics, it turns out, hummus is also fantastically flexible. Whether you're hummus-obsessed (like us) or just a casual dipper, get creative with your next blend.
