It’s Friday and you've worked hard this week so, how about something easy? It’s the Fast Friday 5 – a quick five things you need to know, served up nice and simple.
Scientists must love red wine. Why else would there by so many studies done on the health benefits of drinking a glass or two if not a passionate love for the crimson elixir? Their obsession is our gain with countless excuses to have a splash now and then.
Here are our five favourite reasons to tipple.
1. Youth. Resveratrol, one of the main health-boosting ingredients in red wine, has been found to fight off the effects of aging and increase longevity. Plus, it fights off diseases associated with aging – now if could only smooth out wrinkles.
2. Better Sleep. Red wine contains melatonin, a hormone that the brain releases to control our inner clocks. If you really need a night cap, pick Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot – they have the highest melatonin kick.
3. Quick Wit. Red wine’s resveratrol boosts blood flow to the brain and improves brain health. Studies have also shown that it may help stave of dementia and Alzheimer’s. Of course, this is in moderation – too much red wine and you may find your wit lagging behind.
4. Free-Radical Ninja at Work. Can we get you a glass of antioxidants? Yep, the same free-radical busting antioxidants that have us juicing daily can also be found in red wine.
5. Flu-Freedom. Polyphenols join the resveratrol in this battle against flu and cold viruses. When these bugs enter your system, they want to spread out and take over but good old red wine keeps them in check.
It’s worth noting that a study conducted in Spain found that non-alcoholic red wine actually displayed superior health benefits to the regular stuff. We’re guessing that scientist no longer gets invited to the bodega.
