My dad’s recipe for mulled wine
You know when you walk into a house and you’re struck by an intoxicating cinnamony, citrusy goodness that instantly envelops you in a warm hug? When the whole house smells so delicious and festive you think the people who live there must be culinary geniuses? I’ll let you in on the secret - they probably have a pot of mulled wine simmering away on the stove.
Instead of a creamy rum and eggnog that will leave you feeling full and bloated, try this lighter, albeit somewhat sleep-inducing holiday drink. It’ll warm you from toes to fingertips and is also incredibly quick and easy to throw together. There are lots of recipes for mulled wine, with all kinds of spices and fruits to add in, but this is a basic and delicious recipe to get you started.
Serves 7
Ingredients
1 bottle cheap red wine (1.5 liters & seriously, as cheap as you can find!)
2 fresh, whole organic lemons thinly sliced
2 fresh, whole organic navel oranges thinly sliced
3-4 cinnamon sticks
3-4 small, whole cloves
Method
1. Toss the sliced lemons and oranges into a large pot along with the cinnamon sticks and cloves. Empty the wine into the pot over the other ingredients and put the pot on medium/high heat.
2. Stir the mixture of fruit, spices and wine with a metal spoon (to avoid dyeing your good wooden spoon) and heat until simmering. The longer you can simmer it, the tastier your mulled wine will be and the better your house will smell. Aim to simmer for at least an hour.
3. When you are ready to serve, simply ladle a scoop or two into mugs. Don’t worry if you get some fruit in the mug as well - it will just keep the flavour even more fresh.
Niki & her father Rene
My dad is quite the jokester. When we were teenagers he would often hand over a beautifully wrapped gift and we would unwrap it only to find a super tacky, old-fashioned mumu or some kind of treasure from the Salvation Army. With an innocent look on his face he would say "do you like it!? does it fit?!" Once he had a good laugh he would hand over our real gifts.
