Did you know that close to 90% of material can be recycled?
But unless we know the ins and outs of the recycling world, we’re bound to throw perfectly good recycling contenders into the trash. That’s where Flying Pigs Curbside Recycling comes in handy.
Established in 2003 by Canmore local Catherine Mullvihill, Flying Pigs got its name from a semi-sarcastic expression. A decade ago, she felt that people in Canmore would only recycle “when pigs fly.” Seeing opportunity to educate and facilitate that process and inspire people to care about the environment, she started Flying Pigs and has since watched recycling habits take off.
Now owned and operated by Jerard McEachern and his partner, Thea Harvey, Flying Pigs offers services to both residential and commercial clients. They don’t just pick up your cardboard, though; with a focus on education they fill you in on what materials are recyclable so you can fill your bins. Then they’ll pick it up and find new homes for your precious plastics, paper, cardboard and milk cartons.
Beyond that, Flying Pigs is flying all over the Bow Valley giving talks to schools and free consulting with businesses. Look out for them at local events, like the Canmore Folk Festival and Annual Spring Creek Block Party.
Thanks to Flying Pigs, recycling is happening, even if pigs still haven’t grown wings.
