Having a sweet tooth and being sweet go hand in hand for you. Luckily, both types of sweetness are in Community Natural Foods’ DNA.
Since 1977 the Wilkes brothers have provided Calgarians everything they need in natural foods, supplements and green living products.
But the sweet part comes from their pioneer efforts in the early days of the organic evolution. They started out selling homemade, dairy-free, sugar- free ice cream and organic bananas at a local fair.
Demand for more lead to their current flagship store in the beltline – easily spotted thanks to a two-story sunflower painted on its side.
Inside, the shelves offer thousands of specialty items. Gluten free? Look for the iridescent orange tags for easy identification. Vegetarians and vegans – your shopping list is totally covered. Organic-vores can head to the frozen foods section to stock up on quick organic entrees like butter chicken, bean burritos and oriental ginger chicken.
Or get it hot. The Vegan Chilli and the Curry Queen Curry always cause a line up at the Sunflower Café. Pair that with some super-satisfying wild rice salad, enriched with pumpkin seeds, nuts and dried cranberries and you’ll be fuelled up for hours.
And Community isn’t just their name, it’s their philosophy. Count on products to have a tiny e-footprint thanks to strong relationships with local suppliers. They recycle (there’s even a cell phone recycle bin at each store), they compost, and all of the Community Natural Food stores use solar and wind power, exclusively.
Sweet.
