Walking into the Sunnyside Natural Market is like walking into a still life painting.
The robust coloured fruits and vegetables displayed at the front of the store are a delight to the eye and promise riches for your palate.
The cornucopia of organic produce in the compact space is mind boggling. There’s always an array of season choices – like autumn’s ample heirloom squashes. It’s not just veggies, the market also specializes in hormone free meat and organic dairy products.
The Sunnyside story began in 1991 as The Eco Shop, selling environmentally sound products such as recycled paper, refillable cleaning supplies and health care items. In 1997, the original owners renamed their establishment and included local and organic food. Loyal customers, Patty Nowlin and Pat Guyn, purchased the market in 2005.
The ‘Pats’ have committed to doing things differently. Bring your own jars and bottles from home. Get them weighed at the front counter and replenish your supply of eco-friendly cleaning supplies or certified organic spices. Their selection of bulk spices and herbs is unmatched. You can find licorice root, peppermint leaf, lecithin, and psyllium husk.
Supplements such as natural berry powder, flax seed whey and fibre protein powder are popular purchases. You can even find recycled aluminum foil and recycled garbage bags.
Sunnyside Natural Market believes in community. They co-organize Urban Farming Workshops, donate food to local school fairs and accept 20% Calgary Dollars (Calgary’s local barter currency) on purchases.
A true masterpiece.
