When it comes to making local organic food available and affordable, The Grainery encourages you to put your money where your mouth is.
Everyone is welcome to shop at this local organic food co-op, but members who volunteer six hours a month get a 15 percent discount.
This non-profit, volunteer run organization has enjoyed a wellspring of support since its earliest beginnings in a Halifax Farmer’s Market stall more than a decade ago.
Today the food cooperative conducts business out of a simple Agricola Street storefront where it offers organic and—almost exclusively—locally sourced food products.
Step inside their cozy mini market and marvel at the shelves neatly stacked with a wide assortment of dried goods - organic nuts, seeds, grains, beans, lentils pasta and dried fruit share space with local Fair Trade coffee, honey, oils, cereal, local preserves and fresh bread.
From the dairy case pick up some creamy goat cheese products, organic, free range local eggs and an assortment of Acadiana Soy products. Their Thai pressed tofu with its ginger, garlic and red pepper flakes will set any stir-fry on stun.
The Grainery also supports a Community Shared Agriculture food share program. Customers who purchase farm shares can pick up their orders at the Grainery. Participating farmers supply products that include fruit, vegetables, herbs, sprouts and assorted meats.
Good food is better than riches.
