There's a spicy upstart sandwiched between the stately grey stone Victorian homes on Bishop Street in Montreal.
Burritoville’s vibrantly painted yellow and orange exterior makes it obvious the folks who run the place have their own way to roll.
And roll they do – burritos, quesadillas and tacos. All vegetarian, all made from organic ingredients and locally-sourced whenever possible. Try the traditional Mexican versions featuring beans and cheese or their sweet potato burrito with apples and brown basmati rice.
For side dishes, Burritoville offers both traditional options and cheeky selections not usually found on a Mexican menu. A side of quinoa or sprout salad to go with your chosen tortilla creation will have you rolling on home with satisfaction.
Tables are scattered around two floors of spacious wood-paneled rooms, with mellow lighting, a fireplace, happy house plants and a self-portrait by Frida Kahlo looking out benevolently over the contented diners. If you can't spare the time to dine in, their take-out comes guilt-free in biodegradable and renewable containers.
This favourite neighbourhood hangout is also a happening music venue. Check out the blackboard at the bottom of the stairs to see who’s playing and then head on upstairs to hear some fine tunes. Or join the Montreal Ukulele Club on Wednesday nights and play along.
Roll on over.
