It’s like coming home for dinner. You don’t know what Mom’s going to serve but you know you’re going to love it and your mouth can’t help but water.
It’s the same at Kale Eatery.
The menu changes daily depending on what organic produce is delivered to the chef each day. Today it might be a steaming plate of local asparagus paired with fragrant basmati rice and mixed vegetables. Tomorrow, a kale salad and a comforting squash stew with barley and spinach.
Since it’s all sold by weight - the lighter the food, the less you pay.
When this family-run business first opened its doors in 1993 it made a little bit of Toronto history. They were the city’s first all-vegan, organic, macrobiotic restaurant. Known then as Sunny Café, it was tucked away inside Noah’s Natural Health Foods store and drew the very type of customers they wanted to cater to.
With business booming, Kale Eatery opened its sleek and chic sister location on Yonge St. two years ago. Six tables provide a little more elbowroom than the Bloor location but the food at each location is equally delicious. Try the wheat-free perogies if they’re on the menu or the roasted sweet potatoes or perhaps Ursula’s vegan brownies if you’ve just popped in for a latte or tea.
Mom might have to watch out. You just may decide to make this your home away from home.
