Digs Dorfman digs organic food.
After four years of running Toronto’s High Park organic farmer’s market, Digs once again found himself closing the season to the pleas and worries of his loyal customers. Where would they go for organic groceries in the winter? Would they really be relegated to the big box chains with their eerily shiny apples?
With that, The Sweet Potato was born.
Now in its fourth year of serving Toronto’s rapidly gentrifying Junction neighbourhood, it takes just one visit to understand its popularity. Because of the store’s large basement storage capacity, Digs is able to purchase his organics in bulk, leading to lower prices for his customers. For those whose wallets recoil in fear when approaching organic grocers, the Sweet Potato’s motto, “natural food…sweeter prices,” is music to the ears.
Whether you’re looking for fresh organic produce, canned goods, frozen foods, meat, dairy, home-baked goods or even beauty products, they carry it all in its slick and kitschy farm stand-inspired space.
Digs strives to carry as much local and organic as possible, but nature dictates that it’s not always feasible. In those situations, either locally-grown, all-natural hydroponic or shipped-in organic options are available.
If you come carrying an appetite, don’t miss the Sweet Potato’s takeout counter. Nothing beats their fresh banana bread. Except for maybe enjoying it on a Junction park bench, with a steaming cup of organic coffee and change in your pocket to spare.
Sweet indeed.
