The weekly bounty of local, organic food – straight from the source – is guaranteed to tempt and inspire. Popping up on different days of the week in neighbourhoods all over the city (Trout Lake, Main Street, Kerrisdale, Kitsilano and the West End), the Vancouver Farmer’s Market is a moveable feast that’s all about fresh food and a festive atmosphere.
Started in 1995, the markets (and the crowds) have since grown exponentially. The organization does a great job of spreading awareness about agricultural issues, genetically modified foods and the mind-boggling variety of life-giving food grown right in our backyards.
Whether you're 3 or 30, you'll marvel over the heaps of fresh organic flowers, herbs, vegetables and fruit. Go hungry and sample some of the food truck offerings, like a hot sweet crepe filled with apple compote and ricotta.
Open from May until well into late October's bountiful harvest, each location is unique and buzzing with activity. There's usually a rotating array of prepared and hot food vendors, local soap makers, creative jewellers, live instrumentalists and educational displays. Bring a tote bag or two to load up with ingredients for healthy, home-cooked meals.
The only hard part is deciding: hazelnut fig bread, cranberry balsamic spread, fresh-caught salmon.
