A Meditation for Darker Days

:: A Meditation for Darker Days
Once winter solstice has passed, Canadians are on the hunt for light. All human beings thrive in light and tend to feel a slump in mood when darkness takes over.

If you find yourself dragging your feet in the dead of winter, this meditation is for you.

Get warm and get comfortable, choosing a position for your body that is alert but not rigid. You may want to sit on a cushion or take a shawl over your shoulders if you feel a draft.

Close your eyes. This may seem counterintuitive: confront darkness with more darkness? But just wait.

Pretend that right behind your eyelid you have a projection screen. It may start out cloaked in darkness, but be patient (as the experienced witness that you are).

Watch to see if you see any shapes start to emerge. Notice how it is not a one-dimensional platform.

After some time, seek out colours. Certainly there isn’t only black and grey behind those eyelids.

Eventually, you may see lighter colours. We can connect these with the chakras in some instances. We can also connect with the fact that in every dark situation, there is an undeniable brightness underneath it all.

Once you have found the light, imagine it spreading through your body.

Light fingertips. Light toes.

Feel bathed in light before you decide to open your eyes.

Doesn’t look so bleak anymore, does it?
