Gretchen Rubin, bestselling author of
The Happiness Project, recently wrote a book on Habit-Forming called
Better Than Before. As you can imagine, she has been on the receiving end of a lot of questions. Turns out that just about every human being on the planet wants to know how to form a new habit.
Gretchen wrote on her blog, “The days are long, but the years are short. I often remind myself: don’t wait to find time for something that’s important to me; make time for it now. Because we never know when we’ll run out of time.”
If you’ve
signed up for a wellness challenge to begin with, chances are that it came from a conscious place. When you start to stumble, it’s likely because your unconscious self wants in.
When you feel the desire to falter, take a breath for this meditation.
Start by being kind to yourself. You made the commitment to change. That is incredible!
We are going to do the breath of fire. This involves inhaling passively and doing sharp contracted exhalations using your abdominal muscles. Don’t go too fast; you don’t want to feel lightheaded. Start with about 20 exhalations in a row.
Before you get started with your first round, think about the things in your life that you would like to push out of your system, like doubt.
Inhale and exhale, 20 times…push…it…out.
After the 20
times you will feel a little invigorated. Sit with that and let your breathing return to normal. We suggest doing it again. Inhale to prepare…exhale…exhale…exhale…you…can…do…this!
Go forth, wellness challengers!
