We’ve all heard the expression, “soft as a baby’s bottom”. And as any new parent will tell you, it’s entirely true. A baby’s skin is irresistibly – perhaps enviably – smooth.
But skin this new is also super-sensitive, and plays an important role in protecting baby against the harsh world outside the womb.
Many mainstream baby products claim to be gentle, yet contain harmful chemicals, such as sulfates and parabens. So, how can you care for baby’s skin without slathering on these nasty substances?
Here are the baby-friendly products you’ll find at my change table:
Wipe. Aleva Naturals’s Bamboo Baby Wipes: These eco-friendly wipes are made of unbleached bamboo, contain organic oils, and are naturally anti-bacterial.
Spray. All Things Jill’s Bottoms Up! Baby Bum Spray: Use this all-natural spray as an alternative to wipes, as a treatment for diaper rash and for additional protection.
Soothe. Matter Company’s Nappy Rash Ointment or All Things Jill’s Smooth as a Baby’s Bum: Both of these products are petroleum-free, provide a soothing barrier against wetness, and can be used to treat dry skin and cradle cap.
Clean. Rocky Mountain Soap Company’s Baby Bear Soap: This French Lavender and Mandarin infused soap bar is gentle on baby’s skin and does not contain synthetic foaming agents.
Wash. All Things Jill’s Sweet Pea Organic Body Wash and Shampoo: This body wash contains organic oils to soothe baby’s skin and, being free of harmful foaming agents, comes in a self-foaming dispenser.
Moisturize. Organic Raw Coconut Oil: Many of the companies listed here include all-natural moisturizers in their line of products, but my choice comes right from my kitchen! Coconut oil is something I always have on-hand and is one of the best moisturizers Mother Nature has to offer.
Protect. Thinkbaby Safe Sunscreen SPF 50+: According to Healthy Canadians, it’s recommended that a baby’s skin not be exposed directly to sunlight. For babies six months and older, moderate use of a zinc oxide based sunscreen is a safer alternative to chemical sunscreens. Thinkbaby is PABA free, does not contain biologically harmful chemicals and is rated “1” (low hazard) by the Environmental Working Group.
Now, if you can just get your lil’ one to stop squirming so you can butter them up!
