Baby, it’s hot outside. Before you take up residence at the local movie theatre, here are a few fun and healthy ways to beat the heat.
1. Watermelon Faceplant. Watermelon is one of the most refreshing summer fruits out there. Packed with minerals, salt and sugar, it’s actually better for rehydration than water! Plus, you can distract yourself from sweltering with a little seed-spitting target practice. Just make sure you buy the organic melons or you’ll be spitting mad when you cut it open and discover no seeds!
2. Really Hot Yoga. All winter long you sweat yourself silly in a studio. Now that it’s hot outside you can go al fresco with your yoga practice. Or, go back to your regular class, sweat your buns off and suddenly stepping outside will feel like taking a trip down the freezer aisle.
3. Do the Opposite. Your brain tells you that you need frozen treats and teeth-numbingly cold drinks. Don’t listen. Heed the wisdom of the folks from India who know that drinking hot tea and eating spicy food is the best way to cool down. Once that spice kicks in, you’ll be beading up a good face sweat – and that’s the body’s way of cooling you off.
4. Adopt Vampire Hours. If your schedule is flexible, consider functioning in the cooler evening and night hours. If you can’t pull that off, at least take a note from the southern hemisphere and rise early so you can siesta during the hottest hours of the day. Hammock highly recommended.
5. Reverse Snowbird. As Canadians, we’re known to travel south for the winter. If the summer heat is making you cranky and hot under the collar, reverse the trend and head north for the summer. Just keep going until you cool off or you start to bump into polar bears.
Have fun with your approach to staying cool and you’ll have that heat beat with a smile. And remember, we’ll be back here in about six months with our tips on giving the winter chill the slip – so, try to enjoy it.
