Food is one of them. Here are 8 ways to improve that partnership.
1. Know What its’ Not. We have a
tendency to give food power it doesn’t deserve. Food is not an emotion, it is not an emotional aid and it’s not a diversion. Food is fuel and the only power it has is the power we get from it.
2. Treat it Like a New Friend. It's time to get chummy with the food you eat. Find out where it comes from, who it’s been with, what it was doing before it arrived on your plate and maybe even where it’s going when you’re done with it. You may be surprised at how interesting your food is. The better you get to know your food, the better you can gauge if it’s worth keeping around.
3. Give Reverence. Whatever you call it, you
need to pay attention and give respect to your meals. The best way to do that is to make food the one thing you never multi-task. No more lunches as you stare at your monitor. No more eating in front of the tube. No more driving and dining. Take a moment, refuel and then get back to it. Respect.
4. Uninvited. Just like that old high school friend who always seems to convince you to do things you know are a bad idea, you need to cut ties with bad-influence foods. Don’t bring it home. Stop it at the door; sorry, pal, you’re just not invited.
5. Conquer Cravings. Your brain is betraying you - at least, when it comes to food cravings. They may feel physical but it’s all in your mind. Deepak Chopra talks about our relationship with cravings and how we can change them in his book “What are You Hungry For?” Dear Brain, you can’t fool me. xoxo
6. Find the Fuel. It’s time to ask your food “what have you done for me lately?” Is it providing you with
fuel, essential minerals, vitamins or oils? It better be, because guess what, your relationship with food is not a two-way street. It’s actually all about you. So, if it’s not doing anything for you; ditch it!
7. Keep it Real. Who needs fake friends? Who needs fake anything? Keep company with
real, whole food and before you know it, you’ll be seeing right through that old fake crowd and wondering what you ever saw in them. Your food should be real and spectacular!
8. Take a Time Out. Now, we’re not talking about separate vacations or anything – this is just a temporary break from food. Fasting is not for everyone but even a 24 hour fast will really change your perspective on food. And, when you reunite, you’ll both treat each other a little better.
We pick our friends carefully and we need to be just as diligent with our food.
