Remember when people used to smoke blissfully unaware of the risk to their health? We may know better about smoking now but it makes you wonder - what hidden health harms are we blissfully unaware of right now?
Take, for example, the device that you’re reading this article on.
We have to pay attention to our technology to make sure it doesn’t become the new smoking. Here are some potential health hazards (don't worry - there's a light at the end of the article full of tips on what to do about it):
EMFs.
This acronym stands for electromagnetic field. Don't go looking for it - it's an invisible line or force that emanates from all of your electronic devices. In many theories, we as humans are regarded as energy rather than matter meaning we have our own EMF. Too much exposure to man-made EMFs could really get your own out of whack.
Radiation.
Cell phones are one thing, but then add on countless Wi-Fi routers, Bluetooth transmitters and other sources that are constantly surrounding us and yikes! Small amounts of radiation can add up in a day.
Eyestrain.
Our poor eyes don’t get a chance to roam as much as they would like. They aren’t designed for staying focused on such a small area for much of the day and over time they will make this known to you.
Lack of Movement.
As we increase the time we spend on our devices, we decrease the time we spend in our bodies. Sure, our hands and wrists are getting a great workout but last time we checked, fit fingers aren't exactly the cornerstones of health. Time to give the thumbs a rest and let the rest of your body catch up!
Attention Span.
It has been said that we live in an ADD culture. Don’t like what you’re reading? Click to the next article. Even watching TV is an exercise in multitasking. The more we lose our ability to concentrate, the more our attention spans will shrink (scary!), which can affect everything from our ability to work to the quality of our relationships.
Let's look to the bright side (no, not the glow of your cell phone) and focus on what we, as health-conscious and awesome human beings, can do.
Let’s Talk Diet.
It turns out that a healthy diet can be the best antidote for smartphone zombie-ism. Vitamin A and beta-carotene can work to protect our eyes. A diet rich in nutrients can give us the proper amount of energy to inspire our bodies to move it rather than staying motionless.
Consuming foods rich in phytonutrients and antioxidants can also help to work as protective barriers for those radioactive and EMF forces that we often can’t control. Finally, when we eat mindfully (yes, we are suggesting you turn that phone off during meals) we can relearn the state of being, rather than doing.
The world may be filled with toxic factors, but we do have the tools to detox ourselves. That's even more powerful than the iPhone 6.
Put that Smartphone down for a sec! Although we learn a lot from our handheld devices, there are some negative repercussions to our technology addictions. Genuine Health helps us with a dietary technology detox. Check out their good-for-you clean nutrition goods here.
