Sesame is full of life and deserves much more than a mere sprinkle on your hamburger bun.
Sesame is grown from an annual plant that reaches 2 to 4 feet tall. She is so delicate that she must be harvested by hand. Like her co-star, Hemp, Sesame is high in polyunsaturated fatty acids, so she’s very sensitive to heat. Raw Sesame does a body good, so please don’t toast or fry her.
While she’s delicate, she provides great strength. Sesame is a source of calcium and phosphorous which are essential for strong teeth and bones. Forgot to pick up milk? No problem, its Sesame’s turn to steal the scene.
Be certain to use unhulled seeds as her coat (hull) contains a lot of the nutrients. Tahini is commonly made from hulled sesame seeds, but not to worry, you can find sesame seed butter which is made with unhulled seeds and use it in place of tahini.
Sesame’s popularity goes beyond her delicate and strong personality, she’s also one of the best masseuses we know. Unrefined sesame oil is high in vitamin E, which is amazing for your skin. Sesame oil is even thought to aid in chronic skin diseases because of the vitamin E content.
Think of Sesame as a topping on your stir-fry, as an added crunch on your salad or breakfast cereal, and make some mylk. Trust us, she may just outshine the lead.
Sesame Mylk
1. Soak 1 cup un-hulled sesame seeds over night in purified water.
2. Rinse well.
3. Blend with approximately 1:4 ratio of sesame seeds to water.
4. Pour through a metal strainer, and then pour the sesame mylk back in the blender with a natural sweetener such as medjool dates, a banana, stevia or raw agave if desired.
