Man Up | Demons
Thursday, July 26, 2012 - Jonathan Maingot
In Man Up, Jonathan chronicles the challenge of turning accident into endeavour. Overcoming years of bad habits, highly honed laziness, and a body that's generally uncooperative unless tricked into cooperation, he writes to remember and share his hard-won formulas for wellness.
Demons? Yup.
Meet Fluffy - my hound dog of depression. And this is Sparky - the whirling dervish of my anxiety. And Damien - the alpha male and my own personal trickster coyote of distraction. He’s the leader of the pack.
Sound familiar? If so, I’m your go-to guy for encouragement and an unconventional perspective on wellness.
I’m not waltzing into wellness dewy-eyed and fresh-faced every morning. I’m struggling. It’s work. But it’s important.
So every day I’m there, waving my torches, battling to keep the hounds at bay.
You might take heart hearing from someone like me - a former smoker. Someone who replaced a diet of cola and beer with one of vegetables and unprocessed food. Someone who grew apart from his family but now works to create connections with them.
Someone who is battling upstream to make the life he envisions happen, who has to work hard towards wellness, but does so with genuine passion.
That’s me.
This column is about knocking down barriers by solving problems that impede wellness.
There’s a lot of catch up to overcome all those years of missing out on what matters, but what else can we do except work our butts off to make it happen?
And you’re invited to be part of this. Tell us your challenges, your work to overcome them, your victories, your losses, your story. If it’s worth living, then it’s worth telling. And if it’s NOT worth telling, then dagnabbit get busy living!
Each post starts with a challenge and how I've managed these difficulties. You’ll find simple, effective tools to help defeat your demons, wherever, whenever, and however they manifest.
We hope you'll find the tools useful, the stories encouraging.
Sayonara Fluffy.
