In Reading for Wellness, we challenge Michelle Superle to win back wellness by re-engaging what brings her the most comfort and joy—reading. She’s looking for wellness, and we’re looking for wellness fuel.
Quick - what’s the first thing you think of when you read the following:
Singapore. Denmark. Mexico.
Wasn’t “happiness”? Don’t worry.
Dan Buettner shares the secrets of the happiest people in the world in a little book he wrote called Thrive: Finding Happiness the Blue Zones Way (turns out those three countries top out the scale, ranking as some of the happiest places on earth, home to the happiest folks).
You’ll hear stories of Danes and their clubs, Mexicans and their laughter-fuelled social celebrations and faith-driven beliefs, and Singaporeans and their work ethic.
Yup, people in Singapore are happy because they work so hard.
We know that one’s hard to believe (just hear Buettner out before you scoff). But we’re sure you’ll be on board with our fav, the Danish concept hygge. Cuddle up on a cool night with warm drinks, glowing candles, loved ones, and plenty of good conversation and games. Happiness in the bag, simple as that. We always knew coziness = happiness.
Okay, you probably knew about hygge too—if not by its fancy Danish name. But there’s a lot to learn in Thrive. Happiness is closer than you think and easier to grasp than you might believe. And at its core, this book reminds us again and again, community is key.
We hope you read it note for note.
