From 95-year-old yoga teachers to 100-year-old marathon runners, it seems we can look forward to old age in a way like never before. As our life spans get longer, so can our ambitions and dreams. We’ve found youthful personalities in higher age brackets that ignore the ‘ole ‘too old for this or that’. Hopefully their wisdom will inspire you to live life more healthfully – and more fully.
Tao Porchon Lynch is a Master yoga teacher who is 94 years young. Her workshops are heavily attended in both New York and New Jersey, and this graceful woman teaches regularly, quite fittingly, at the Fred Astaire Studio.
Tao has stated she wants to do everything today because “tomorrow never comes”. After a hip replacement, she still rocks full lotus, shoulder stand and arm balances. She doesn’t believe there’s anything she (or you) can’t do, and that calling oneself too old is “silly”.
After 70 years of yoga, 45 years of teaching and a current dance career with men a quarter of her age, we had to speak with her. More wisdom abounded in our interview with this glorious woman:
Tell us about yourself and about your life.
When I wake up in the morning I always look forward to each day. I try not to think negative thoughts because I know they will materialize. I like getting to know people throughout the world. I also like getting to know children and my students, and to respect the beauty of nature.
What brought you to yoga and did you expect to like it?
I started yoga as a child when I saw boys doing it. Yes, I knew I would like it because I always liked to dance.
What’s the best thing about getting older?
Realizing that you can still do everything that you wanted to do.
What is the most difficult thing about getting older?
Having people worry about you!
Health-wise, is there something you wished you had done differently when you were younger?
No. I always wanted to dance and I never took a job that I didn’t like.
What do you think most people should do when they’re younger to help with optimal health as they age?
To get involved with nature.
What do you feel the secret is to age gracefully and healthfully?
To smile at the world.
