It’s Friday and you've worked hard this week so, how about something easy? It’s the Fast Friday 5 – a quick five things you need to know, served up nice and simple.
Planning a veggie patch is exciting. Before you go all willy-nilly with the parsley and parsnips – consider planting a theme veggie garden stocked with everything you need for a specific dish or drink.
Here are our 5 faves:
1. S-s-s-spicy S-s-s-salsa. Nothing says latino love like homemade salsa and it’s even better when it comes from your backyard or balcony planter box. Plant roma tomatoes, red chilli peppers, jalepeno peppers, garlic, onions, and cilantro then simply pick and blend. If you like your salsa verde, exchange Romas for tomatillos. Olé!
2. Now Thatsa Nice-a Garden. Whether you’re spooning it over fresh pasta or slathering it onto an organic pizza crust – a basic Italian tomato sauce is an easy garden to grow. Plant a variety of tomatoes, basil, oregano, parsley, and garlic. Presto – taking a trip to Italy just got a lot quicker.
3. Chips and Dip. Make snack time a whole lot healthier with a garden full of good-for-you num-nums. Kale, beets, potato (in many heirloom varieties), sweet potato and parsnip all make amazing chips. Take it to the next level with a healthy dip using your home-grown herbs, chives and garlic. Bring on the munchies.
4. Cocktails, Anyone? Your garden can provide you with ample cocktail accoutrements – check out The Drunken Botanist for inspiration. We’d plant several varieties of mint (mojitos), strawberries and raspberries (margaritas), cucumbers (gin & tonics) and tomatoes (bloody marys). You could also try your hand at various cocktail syrups by planting violets, lavender, basil or chilli peppers. Of course, these all work beautifully in mocktails too! Cheers.
5. Comfort Soup. It may be hard to think about now but come fall, you’re going to want some hearty, warm you from the inside soup. Plant pumpkin, butternut squash, potato, thyme, onion and garlic and you’ll be itching for the end of summer so you can snuggle up to this soup from the garden.
Give your veggie patch a theme and the next time someone asks how your garden grows you can answer, ‘with purpose!’
