Although we’re Canada proud, sometimes we need a change of pace in a new place. Our yoga teachers apparently agree. Join them in their once-a-year, once-in-a-lifetime retreats in places so serene, they’ll do your meditating for you. Sometimes it takes a little uprooting to get you feeling grounded again.
Grace Dubery doesn’t keep her practice directly on the yoga mat. She plays near dinosaurs in the Royal Ontario Museum. She snaps photos from exotic locations. She has lived all over the world. Grace welcomes these changes with a serene smile on her face. What better person to lead you through a vacation dedicated to the spiritual discipline of yoga?
When you think about yoga retreats, you may think of islands. This retreat doesn’t deviate from the dream, but it’s not where you might expect. The setting is the magical island of Principe, with year round gorgeous temperatures ready to get you feeling all sorts of fantastic.
At The Bom Bom Island Resort (hip shaking optional every time you say that) you’ll participate in twice daily yoga classes in lush environments and enjoy fresh food with detox principles. However, yoga is a lot more than your ability to press your heels down in downward dog. This retreat encourages community involvement (“karma yoga”), making the participant not only feel more in touch with him or herself but also to the world at large.
Grace elaborates: “This retreat is a combination of my greatest passions: yoga, travel and Africa. I went to school for African studies, and have traveled extensively in the continent. Having the chance to return to teach yoga there is a dream for me, particularly since we will be quite involved in the community by visiting a school.”
On an island just 12 miles long, yogis and yoginis will be given plenty of time to spread their toes in the sand while sipping on hollowed out coconuts. Every participant will rest from the day of bliss in a private bungalow with a pristine view and linens so white and crisp, they will blanket you like clouds. (Heaven, is that you?).
Sometimes, taking your practice out of the yoga studio can bring you a step closer to feeling spacious and filled with peace.
