St. Laurent Boulevard, the stretch of street jammed with fly bars and chic boutiques, is also the place to find the best deals on organic food in Montreal.
Segal's supermarket stocks a wide range of organic, dry goods and dairy products at unbeatable prices. But, before you go out looking for an average health food emporium, be forewarned. This Mecca for the health food maven on a budget is so cleverly disguised that only those in the know would ever find it.
There's no sign, just a big plate glass window with faded letters that say "Segal's: Since 1927." Pull open the heavy door, push past the shoppers lined up at the cash registers and you'll be glad you came. And grab a cart, because you're going to need it.
Wheel down the first two aisles to find most of the organic food, including breads, dairy products, grains, nut butters, oils and environmentally friendly cleaning products. Don’t miss the freezers if you’re looking for organic meat, berries, vegetable, burgers and pizzas.
The fridges at the front of the aisle offer prepared vegetarian meals, a selection of organic dips, spreads and pâtés, flax seed oil and tofu galore. And when you and your bulging cart make it to the cash, be sure to grab a handful of fair trade chocolate bars.
And bring your own bags. That's one thing Segal's doesn't have.
