The concept is simple: start with a group of unusual food pairings, add a dash of exotic flavour, mix liberally with savoury seasonings and you’ve got a recipe for Fresh.
From its humble beginnings as a mobile juice bar in 1990, Fresh has grown into a full-scale eatery with three Toronto locations. Founded by Ruth Tal on a desire to create great-tasting food for vegetarians and meat-eaters alike, Fresh’s menu now contains over a hundred vegan and gluten-free items.
For the fusion fanatic, try the beach fresh bowl – a perfect harmony of roasted vegetables, olive oil, sunflower sprouts, lemon, mixed herbs and choice of grilled tofu steaks or goat cheese (there’s a reason it’s the most popular item on the menu).
Patrons craving some spice will be taken in by the chipotle avocado sauce in the black bean burrito served with a side of their cool marinated kale slaw.
The atmosphere here is undecidedly fresh. Bright décor, upbeat music and a lively clientele best describes this urban foodie hotspot.
There’s also a large variety of ready-made food available for take-away but be forewarned: you’ll likely surrender to the baked goods on display near the till. All of Fresh’s desserts come courtesy of Sweets from the Earth, a popular vegan bakery that National Post columnist Karen Hawthorne credits for creating the best cookie she’s ever eaten.
Resistance is futile.
