No problem maan!
In fact, it’s absolutely no problem finding Ras Iville and Ikeila Wright’s One Love Vegetarian restaurant.
Not when you hop off at Bathurst subway station and spy the giant, electrifying green mural on the side of the building. It should clue you in to the type of exciting, vibrant, spicy Caribbean food waiting for you on the inside.
Not too many people think of Jamaican and vegetarian in the same breath but you will once you’ve tasted some of Ras Iville and Ikeila’s offerings.
One Love started off as a soup kiosk in Harbourfront Centre’s World Café food court but the one-of-a-kind corn soup (chunks of corn on the cob in a pumpkin broth and enough spicy heat to clear out your sinuses) that Ras served was enough to make people wonder why he didn’t open a restaurant.
And so he did. To great reviews.
Mind you, this is chiefly a take-out place. There is a small seating area but don’t expect to sit down and shoot the breeze.
The $5 corn soup is still as spectacular and popular as ever but the other island dishes like dahl-puri and paratha stuffed with chana or pumpkin are also worth trying, as is the vegan pizza. Just remember that almost everything is spicy so you might want to wash it down with a home-brewed Jamaican ginger beer or a smoothie.
The menu isn’t huge but practically everything on it will make your mouth irie.
