Get ready for an autumn flavour explosion. Thanksgiving’s just a few short weeks away so ‘tis the season of cranberries. You can find them fresh at this time of year in some stores, but if you can’t, guaranteed they’ll be in your freezer section (we’d steer away from canned or dried – they’re usually over-sweetened and preserved).
Rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, cranberries help prevent cancer & dental disease, strengthen immune function, support kidney, bladder and urinary tract health and can even support weight loss. Adding orange, carrot (hello fibre!), and honey tones down the characteristic tartness of this red super-berry and adds even more nutritional density to your smoothie. Ginger gets your digestive fires a burnin’ so that it all gets assimilated nice n’ easy.
Iron-rich spinach is a good choice because all the other ingredients help to make that iron more bioavailable and absorbable for your body.
Ok – blender time!
Ingredients
Go organic.
- 1 navel orange, peeled, no seeds
- 1/3 heaping cup of fresh or frozen cranberries (not dried unless they are unsweetened, unsulphered and soaked)
- 1/3 cup shredded carrot
- A big handful of spinach
- 1-2 tsp grated fresh ginger (or more if you love a spicy kick)
- 1 Tbsp hemp hearts
- 1 tsp honey
- 1 cup of filtered water – or more if needed
Blend until smooth and savour the fall flavour. Add a lil’ more honey if it’s not quite sweet enough.
