All things considered, in the world of smoothie-ing, berries are best.
Here’s why…
As far as fruit is concerned, they’re the richest in these 3 nutritive heavy hitters:
- Antioxidant bioflavonoids and carotenoids
- The phytonutrient ellagic acid
- Fibre
Plus, they’re low glycemic (low sugar) and highly digestible.
All of these characteristics in and of themselves support general well-being plus liver function.
The icing on the cake for optimal liver love is, however, the addition of green leafies like spinach, lettuce or kale – but most of all, milk thistle.
Milk thistle contains a complex bioflavonoid called silymarin. Silymarin is responsible for numerous health benefits like lowering cholesterol, controlling blood sugar, protecting the body from free radicals and regenerating damaged liver tissue.
If you can find fresh milk thistle, more power to ya. I buy it in a liquid concentrate at a health food store and you only need a few teaspoons to get a good dose.
Side note: Pick your naturopath or nutritionist’s brain if you’re unsure if this herb is right for you.
If you can’t find milk thistle or just don’t wanna use it, this smoothie still tastes great without it and is nothin’ but healthy… so blend on!
