This time of year in the northern hemisphere, there’s a natural tendency to contract and conserve energy – much like our furry friends in the wild. Part of our shared nature is to seek warmth, nourishment and shelter. While the squirrels are gathering acorns, we’re sipping on a fall fig & cinnamon nut shake.
If you’re feeling called to enter a state of hibernation, now is the time to surround yourself with cozy comforts, heart-filled recipes and home-based projects (introverts, unite).
That being said, those damp, cold, bleak days are a bummer. Not to mention the seclusion and ‘slump’ that can arise from months of low-key daylight.
One simple tool you can use to counteract the effects of stagnant cold energy is Breath of Joy.
Derived from the Kripalu Yoga tradition, Breath of Joy awakens the body systems, stimulates oxygen intake and gently stokes inner agni (fire).
This breathing exercise combines deep inhalation with a fluid motion to charge the body with prana (energy). You’ll likely feel a little better than you did before.
All you need is about 3 minutes and an intention to set before you start.
How to practice Breath of Joy:
- Stand with feet hip-width apart and knees slightly flexed. Keep knees soft with a slight bounce to protect the low back.
- Exhale deeply. As you begin inhaling, fill up one-third of your lungs and raise your arms in front of you to shoulder height.
- As you inhale to fill up two-thirds of your lungs, sweep the arms out to the sides to shoulder height.
- Complete the full inhalation as you raise your arms overhead (palms facing).
- Swing the arms to the ground, exhaling with a “ha” sound. Bend forward from the hips and use the momentum of your exhalation to extend the arms behind you.
- Inhale as you carry the upper body back to a standing position, and lift your arms in front of you to move into a second cycle. Repeat up to 10 times. You can also do this seated in a chair.

Always allow the breath to guide your movements. Let it happen rhythmically, without force.
When you’re experiencing any blockage or stagnancy, Breath of Joy is a beautiful way to reignite energy. Plus, you can keep your toes nestled in cozy socks for this one.
