Tweaked from the styrofoam packaged fare with help from seriouseats.com and lifehacker.com
This little trick has recently been popularized as a bit of a “life hack”. It’s the perfect antidote to noodle cravings and particularly to those horribly sodium-packed styrofoam monstrosities we all know so well.
Best to pack your noodle mix in heavy glass (make sure it can withstand boiling water) or stainless steel. Boiling water and plastic aren’t pals, so avoid Tupperware. Over time your plastic will break down and leach chemicals into your food (actually this happens by simply using plastic containers over time – particularly with acidic foods like tomato).
Ingredients
Noodles
Any noodle will work if you pre-cook them. If you want to pop your noodles into your to-go cup raw and cook them simply using the pour-over method though, go for something thin like vermicelli noodles or angel hair pasta.
Flavourings
Half of a veggie bouillon cube will work in a jiffy here, but if you want to go even healthier, we used:
1 scoop Kimchi
1 clove garlic, pressed
1 tsp Oregano
sea salt
pepper
1 squeeze of Hoisin Sauce
Veggies & Toppings
Green onion, chopped
Parsley, de-stemmed and chopped
Carrots, sliced into matchsticks
Mushrooms, sliced
Celery, chopped
Frozen peas
Turkey Jerky (optional)
Method
1. Prep your noodle bowl the night before or morning of, assembling all of your ‘dry’ (whatever is OK to have boiling water poured on top) components in your jar. If you’ve got anything you’d like to keep fresh (aka, not spoiled by steaming hot water – like cilantro or green onions perhaps) – keep that in a separate container or Ziploc bag.
2. First put your flavourings in the bottom (especially anything ‘wet’ like kimchi and hoisin). Next shove the dry (or precooked) noodles in on top. Arrange your pre-prepped veggies around the noodles and anything else that’s going in (like maybe turkey jerky?)
3. Close the lid on your container and transport to work or wherever you’re headed. When you’re ready to eat, simply open the container and pour boiling water on top. Close the lid for several minutes, allowing the noodles to ‘cook’ and veggies to soften. Once it’s ready, open the lid, give everything a good stir – blending the flavours and add any fresh toppings. Enjoy!
