You’ve probably been through stages of a healthy life. In college, it seemed healthy if you went to the gym after a night of binge drinking. As entered into the work force, you had a bland salad for lunch because it seemed like the right thing to do. And now, you’re as interested by nutritional stats as you used to be with shopping.
As with happiness, there’s always another level we can reach when it comes to our health. If you’re a kale munching, yoga mat toting, health food aficionado, this list is for you.
Heck, it’s for everyone, because your health can be a result of your own actions. Just try to keep the Facebook bragging to a minimum.
Water, Meet Lemon. Lemon, Water
This is a match made in heaven and not just because it makes water more palatable. Lemons are packed with vitamin C, which can help boost immunity and potassium, which can help with post-workout recovery. It also loosens toxins in your digestive tract. Add a little citrus to your water bottle in the morning, or own who you are by keeping some lemons in your desk at work. If someone is skeptical, you can just say, “When life gives you lemons…”
Healthy Fats Will Make You Healthy (Not Fat)
Here’s an interesting study done by Ohio State University. Take a carrot, lettuce and spinach salad. Healthy stuff, right? Add 3 tablespoons of avocado and you get a staggering 8.3 times alpha-carotene, 13.6 times beta-carotene and 4.3 times more lutein. Anything that will justify our guacamole addiction.
A Little Less on Your Plate Can Keep You Living Longer
The Blue Zones of the world are geographic areas where people live measurably longer lives. There are many factors that determine their longevity, but one is as simple as eating a little less. Blue Zone folks eat at least 20% less than we do. You might find that by eating slower and being mindful, this will happen naturally. We have to do what we can to make it into the triple digits.
Being Grateful is Not Just for Your Mind
Scientists are trying to wrap their minds around why positive thinkers tend to have greater resistances to the common cold and increased life spans. If you’re building up your muscles, think about building up your resilience by making gratitude a daily practice. Oprah would be so proud.
Don’t Be Afraid to Supplement
It’s the same thing as learning when you need to ask for help. If you’re plowing along on the same diet year after year, there are factors that are out of your control. The state of our fruits and veggies are becoming less nutritious due to the state of our soil (among other factors). You can defend your health with a product like greens+, which is a great superfood powder (and makes a killer green smoothie).
We can see you glowing already.
