With the sun shining brighter and more time spent out in the heat, it’s easy for thirst to sneak up.
Even though we’ve been told a bazillion times we’re supposed to drink—say it with me—eight glasses of water a day, we all know it’s not always that easy. Next time you’re looking for some hydration inspiration, consider giving these tasty skewers a try.
Thirst-quenching watermelon, salty feta, fragrant mint, and juicy, crunchy cukes create a nutritionally and flavourfully balanced bite.
The high water content of the melon and cucumber are a no-brainer on these hot days, but the sodium in the feta is what gives your electrolytes a boost. Electrolytes—what our cells use to maintain voltages across cell membranes—facilitate electrical impulses that are needed to maintain major bodily functions, like muscle contraction (e.g. the heart) and nerve impulses. In short, we literally can’t live without them!
Because we know no one wants to be indoors cooking in the summer, a little bit of prep goes a long way. Cut up the ingredients in advance (this will take you 10-15 minutes, tops!), package them in individual containers, and the morning—or night before—you anticipate needing a refreshing nibble, simply slide them onto a skewer for an awesome afternoon treat.
Ingredients (this is too easy to call a recipe)
Method
1. Put the watermelon, feta, and cucumber in individual containers. Keep the mint fresh by keeping it on its stem and pulling the leaves off only when you need them.
2. When you’re ready for a snack, simply layer the ingredients onto a skewer. Eat right away or place in an airtight container in the fridge for several hours until hunger strikes.
*Pro tip: Try to get a bite of each ingredient at the same time. The flavour combo is amazing!
