The carbonation in a glass of champagne is part of the fun factor. Bubbly and effervescent, it’s hard to be in a bad mood when holding a flute.
This bar in Toronto thinks it might be able to replace your bubbles, or at least give you some bubble diversity.
Pekoe is a one-of-a-kind concept serving up the ancient brew, Kombucha, on tap. It’s a whole new kind of microbrewery, if you ask us.
If you aren’t yet familiar with Kombucha, let us introduce you to the concept. Kombucha is sweetened tea that has undergone a fermentation process, leaving behind a fizzy drink with plenty of health boosting, detoxifying and energizing benefits.
Although the brew seems to be gaining popularity in the mainstream, it's anything but a fad. In fact, Kombucha, which is traditionally known as the “Immortal Health Elixir,” originated around 200 B.C in China.
For healthy Torontonians packing their bags (or at least their reusable bottles), Pekoe is conveniently located inside the Bay and Dundas location of YogaTree. It boasts as Canada’s first draught based Kombucha company and serves several mouthwatering flavours of the brew made from fresh ingredients.
For $6 you can pull up a stool at the bar and enjoy a tasty brew straight from the tap (we suggest not doing a keg stand). For those on the run, they also offer 375ml bottles ($5) and larger 1L Growlers for $12 (as well an eco-friendly option for $8 when you bring back the bottle).
The owner Dan, an experienced tea-preneur, also has a background in mixology. Dan takes it up a notch by creating signature cocktails with slow-pressed juice mixed with the probiotic-rich Kombucha. During our taste test, we learned that by combining the juice with the Kombucha it actually enhances the phytonutrients and amino acids.
Don’t expect the same finish as you would from a gin and tonic, but there is an energy buzz and health buzz that might give a whole other meaning to “Let’s go to the bar.”
