On the eve of a New Year, even if we’re not prone to set goals, we’re usually filled with hope for change. However, more often than not, come February, commitments are on shaky ground (or no ground at all).
How do we ensure that we stick to ‘em, whether we’re self-reflecting at year-end or in the middle of July? We nabbed some inside information from psychologists to ensure we bring full awareness to our desired journey for the year ahead.
1. BELIEVE You Can Create Change
There is no use in a goal set emphatically after tequila shots. It must be deliberate, intentional and powerful. Whether you’re giving up coffee or dreaming of climbing Everest, believe in yourself.
2. Use Your Shampoo Bottle as Your Mantra
Rinse and repeat – well, maybe not the rinse part. Repetition is the key to success. You don’t lose significant weight or run a marathon in a month. It’s the multiple efforts and the short-term goals that’ll keep you on the path. Each week, write down a progressive step that takes you closer to your end goal.
3. Simplify the Process.
If you make your goal too lofty or inherently uncomfortable, you will rebel. No pain, no gain only works for so long. S.I.M.P.L.I.F.Y. Find easy solutions rather than making change your entire life.
4. All Improvement Counts.
If you still sneak a cup of coffee or have a slice of cake, you cannot berate yourself and cause yourself mental harm and stress. It happens. B.F. Skinner’s early research indicates that we must reward ourselves rather than punish ourselves. Would they kick you out of therapy if you didn’t do absolutely everything they suggested? You are human. Take every step as one that counts and celebrate.
5. Invite Others Into Your Plans!
Even though it may feel safer to tell no one of your plans, choose at least a few people with who you can review your personal experiences. Even better, find 1-2 that will help hold you accountable.
The American Society of Training and Development found this was a key to successful change. People can help remind you what you are striving for when you lose sight of the big picture.
Take these fresh perspectives into the new year and give your goals a makeover.
