“I don’t enjoy eating lunch with some women who only have kale. I just find it limiting. I’d rather not go on, if that’s what I have to eat to fuel myself.” CANDICE BERGEN, actress
Although we don’t know if we would off ourselves due to an excess of kale, it is human nature to seek food diversity. Even if you swear that you love green smoothies (so do we) and think dates really are nature’s candy, being too perfect can have the tendency to bring out anyone’s inner rebel.
What if we told you there are surprising foods that can keep you on the clean-eating path without derailing your goals? Well it’s true, and the proof is in the (avocado) pudding:
Pannycake, pannycake, baker’s man.
Of course clean pancakes have to be made without all of the flour and butter, but that doesn’t mean they won’t be delicious. Have you tried the 2 eggs, 1 banana pancake? It will change your life.
You had us at pudding.
Raw pudding is a revelation. We repeat: a revelation. Whether you make it chocolate friendly with raw cacao powder or tart it up with a citrus is your choice. The only problem is that you will need to start buying avocadoes in bulk. Scratch that: there is absolutely no problem.
Keep that chip on your shoulder.
Stop overusing the potato, already. There are so many other vegetables that would love their chance to be chipped. Fennel, turnips, zucchini, beets and eggplant are absolutely delicious ways to nosh.
Noodles can be more than pool toys.
If you’ve put noodles on the do not eat list, you must invest in a spiralizer. If you’re skeptical of something called a spiralizer, a vegetable peeler will work. Make elegant noodles from zucchini, carrots, spaghetti squash or cucumbers. Douse them in your favourite sauces. We like a high peanut sauce to noodle ratio.
Chocolates are a girl’s best friend.
We assume chocolate must also be sinful. Yet chocolate a day can make the inflammation go away. It may even lower your risk of a heart attack. Just make sure that you reach for 70% cacao or higher. If you have tamed your sweet tooth, consider getting into cacao nibs, which don’t have the sweetness but do have the punch. Since this isn’t as sweet, you won’t be as likely to stuff your face mindlessly.
A diverse diet goes beyond nutritional blathering. It actually means that the over 50 vitamins, amino acids, minerals and essential fatty acids that the body cannot make itself may get covered in the course of a week.
If you tuned the rest of this article out except for the permission to eat more chocolate, we completely understand.
